When opening Trend Micro VPN on Windows, the application may fail to start and display the following error message:

This issue commonly happens when the Windows user account does not have Administrator privileges, or when Windows permission settings prevent Trend Micro VPN components from running.

Why Did This Happen

This issue may occur due to:

  • Insufficient user permissions (the Windows account is not an Administrator)
  • Windows permission restrictions preventing Dep_manage.exe from starting
  • Trend Micro VPN requires administrator-level access to run certain core components.

How Do I Fix This

  1. Confirm the Error Code
    • Try launching Trend Micro VPN again.
    • Check if the error displayed is 0xc0000142.
    • Verify that the file shown in the message is Dep_manage.exe.
    • If the error matches, proceed to the next solution.
  2. Check If the Windows Account Has Administrator Access
    • Press Windows + R on your keyboard.
    • Type control and click OK.
    • Go to User Accounts.
    • Select Change account type.
    • Check if your account is set to Administrator.
    • If it is not an Administrator, select Administrator then click OK.
    • Restart your computer.
    • Reopen Trend Micro VPN to check if the error message still persists.

Expected Result

After switching the user account to Administrator and restarting the device, Trend Micro VPN should open normally without showing the 0xc0000142 error.
