How to compress and extract a file in Windows

Compress and password-protect a file using Windows’s built-in zip program
- Right-click on the file, select Send To, and then select Compressed (zipped) folder. A zipped file with the same file name will be created in the same directory.
- To add a password to protect your file, double-click on the zipped file to open it, then click File > Add a password.
- On the Password field, type "novirus". This is the default password for Trend Micro files.
- Retype the password into the Confirm Password field, then click OK.
- After adding the password, click on the Up button (the icon of a folder with a green arrow pointing upward) to go to the folder that contains your original and zipped files.
- Send the compressed or zipped file to Trend Micro Technical Support.
Extract a password-protected zipped files using Windows’s built-in zip program
- Save the zipped file (for example, Sample File.zip) to a familiar location, such as your desktop.
- Double-click on the file to open it, then click File > ExtractAll from the top menu.
- When the Extraction Wizard window appears, click Next.
- When you are prompted to select the location for the extracted files, click Next. You do not need to make any changes since the default location is where you saved the zipped file. The program will create a folder with the same name as the zipped file.
- When you are prompted for a password, type "novirus".
- Click OK.
- Wait for the extraction to complete. Once the contents of the zipped file have been extracted, click Finish. Make sure that the box beside Show extracted files is ticked so that Windows will automatically open up the location of the extracted files.
Compress and password-protect a file using the WinZip program
If you do not have WinZip on your computer, you can download an evaluation copy from http://www.winzip.com. When you have installed the program, you may follow the steps below to compress (zip) a file and assign a password to protect it:
- Right-click on the file you want to compress, and select Add to Zip.
- When the WinZip Evaluation window appears, click I Agree. The Add box appears.
- Under the Add to Archive box, type in the desired path and file name for the location where you want to zip the file.
- Click Password.
- When you are asked for the password you want to assign to the file, type in “novirus”. This is the default password for Trend Micro files.
- When prompted, re-enter the password for confirmation.
- Click OK.
You can now send the compressed (zip) file to Trend Micro Technical Support.
Extract password-protected zipped files using the WinZip program
If you do not already have WinZip on your computer, you can download an evaluation copy from http://www.winzip.com. When you have installed the program, you may follow the steps below to extract (unzip) a file that is protected by a password:
- Save the zipped file (for example, Sample File.zip) to a familiar location, such as your desktop.
- Double-click on the file to run it. The WinZip Evaluation dialog box will appear.
- Click I Agree.
- Select the file (for example, example.doc) and click Extract.
- Select the destination directory. If you are prompted for a password, type in "novirus". This is the default password for Trend Micro files.
