Install Qnap NAS

Accessing Qnap NAS
Accessing the NAS Using Qfinder Pro
- Install Qfinder Pro on a computer that is connected to the same network as the NAS. To download Qfinder Pro, go to https://www.qnap.com/en/utilities.
- Open Qfinder Pro. Qfinder Pro automatically searches for all QNAP NAS devices on the network.
- Locate the NAS in the list, then double-click the name or IP address. The QTS login screen opens in the default web browser.
- Specify your username and password.
- Click Login. The QTS desktop will appear.
Accessing the NAS Using Qmanager (For mobile devices)
- Install Qmanager on an Android or iOS device. To download Qmanager, go to the Apple App Store or the Google Play Store.
- Open Qmanager.
- Tap Add NAS. Qmanager automatically searches for all QNAP NAS devices on the network.
- Locate the NAS in the list, then tap the name or IP address.
- Specify your username and password.
Accessing the NAS Using a Browser
- Verify that your computer is connected to the same network as the NAS.
- Open a web browser on your computer.
- Type the IP address of the NAS in the address bar.
- Specify your username and password.
- Click Login. The QTS desktop appears.
Securing QTS Access
The default username and password of Qnap NAS devices are “admin” and “admin” respectively. It is recommended to change this to a stronger password, combination of numbers, uppercase, and lowercase letters. You can follow the steps below to change your admin credentials.
- In QTS, go to Options, then click Password Settings.
- Specify the following information to change your password.
- Old password
- New password: Specify a password with a maximum of 64 characters
- Specify an email address to receive a notification email to recover your password if you forgot the password. You need to configure SMTP settings in the Notification Center to use this feature.
- Click Apply to save all changes.
2-step Verification
2-step verification enhances the security of user accounts. When the feature is enabled, users are required to specify a six-digit security code in addition to the account credentials during the login process.
- Install an authenticator application on your mobile device. QTS supports the following apps:
- Google Authenticator: Android, iOS, and BlackBerry
- Authenticator: Windows Phone
- Verify that the system times of the NAS and mobile device are synchronized.
- In QTS, go to Options, then click 2-step Verification.
- Click Get Started. The 2-step Verification window opens.
- Open the authenticator application on your mobile phone.
- Configure the application by scanning the QR code or specifying the security key displayed in the 2-step Verification window.
- In the 2-step Verification window, click Next. The Confirm your 2-step verification settings screen appears.
- Specify the security code generated by the authenticator application.
- Select an alternative verification method that will be used whenever your mobile device is inaccessible.
- Answer Security Question
- Select one of the options or provide your own security question.
- Email a Security Code
- Go to Control Panel > Notification Center > Service Account and Device Pairing > Email.
- Verify that the SMTP server is correctly configured.
- Answer Security Question
- Click Finish.
Configuring the Allow/Deny List
- Go to Control Panel, then choose System.
- Click Security, then click Allow/Deny List.
- Select an option.
- Allow all connections: The NAS can connect to all IP addresses and network domains.
- Select Allow all connections.
- Use IP deny list: The NAS cannot connect to any IP address or network domains included in the IP deny list.
- Select Deny connections from the list.
- Click Add. The IP configuration window appears.
- Specify an IP address, netmask, or IP range.
- Click Create.
- Use IP allow list: The NAS can only connect to the IP addresses or network domains included in the IP allow list.
- Select Allow connections from the list only.
- Click Add. The IP configuration window appears.
- Specify an IP address, netmask, or IP range.
- Click Create.
- Allow all connections: The NAS can connect to all IP addresses and network domains.
- Click Apply.
Configuring IP Access Protection
- Go to Control Panel, then choose System.
- Click Security, then click IP Access Protection.
- Select the connection methods you want to protect. SSH, Telnet, and HTTP(S) are enabled by default.
- Optional: Specify the following information:
- Time period
- Maximum number of unsuccessful login attempts within the time period
- Amount of time the IP will be blocked
- Click Apply.
Configuring Account Access Protection
- Go to Control Panel, then choose System.
- Click Security, then click Account Access Protection.
- Specify the user type.
- Select the connection methods you want to protect.
- Optional: Specify the following information:
- Time period
- Maximum number of unsuccessful login attempts within the time period
- Click Apply.
Configuring the Password Policy
- Go to Control Panel, then choose System.
- Click Security, then click Password Policy.
- Under Password Strength, configure any of the following password criteria.
- English Letters
- Digits
- Special Characters
- Must not include characters repeated three or more times consecutively
- Must not be the same as the associated username, or the username reversed
- Minimum length
- Optional: Require NAS users to periodically change their passwords.
- Select Require users to change passwords periodically.
- Specify the maximum number of days that each user password is valid.
- Optional: Select Send a notification email to users a week in advance of their password expiring.
- Click Apply.
QNAP recommends keeping your NAS firmware up to date. This ensures that your NAS can benefit from new QTS software features, security updates, enhancements, and bug fixes.
Live Update
Firmware updates are automatically detected by QTS and installed onto your device.
- Go to Control Panel, then choose System.
- Click Firmware Update, then click Live Update.
- Click Check for Update. QTS checks for available firmware updates. You can choose to update QTS if there is an available update.
- Optional: Select Auto Update. The Auto Update Settings window appears.
- Enable Auto Update.
- Specify the auto update frequency.
- Click Apply.
Manual Update
You can check for the latest device firmware updates on the QNAP website, download the firmware update to a computer, and manually install the firmware update onto your device.
- Download the NAS firmware.
- Go to http://www.qnap.com/download.
- Select the number of drive bays on your NAS model.
- Select your NAS model.
- Read the release notes and confirm the following:
- The NAS model matches the firmware version.
- Updating the firmware is necessary.
- Check for any additional firmware update setup instructions.
- Ensure that the product model and firmware are correct.
- Select the download server based on your location.
- Download the firmware package.
- Click Browse.
- Select a folder.
- Save the downloaded firmware package.
- Extract the firmware image file.
- Go to Control Panel, then choose System.
- Click Firmware Update, then click Firmware Update.
- Click Update System. A confirmation message window appears.
- Click OK. The device is immediately restarted.
- On the QTS Task Bar, click on your Username.
- Click Restart.
Advanced system reset
This performs a basic system reset and then restores the QTS default settings, deleting all users, user groups, and shared folders previously created. The user data stored on the disks are retained.
Using QTS
- Go to Control Panel, then choose System.
- Click Backup/Restore, then click Restore to Factory Default.
- Click Reset Settings.
- Choose to restart or shutdown the NAS after the system is reset.
- Click OK.
Using the reset button
- Power on the NAS.
- Press and hold the reset button for 10 seconds.
Restore factory default settings and format all volumes
This restores the default system settings and formats all disk volumes.
- Go to Control Panel, then choose System.
- Click Backup/Restore, then click Restore to Factory Default.
- Click Restore Factory Defaults Format All Volumes.
- Choose to restart or shut down the NAS after the system is reset.
- Click OK.
