Listed below are some of the helpful guides you can follow if you need to troubleshoot your Buffalo Network Attached Storage (LS200, LS400, LS500 Series).
NAS Navigator2
For Windows or macOS 10.12 and Earlier
- Go to the d.buffalo website (https://d.buffalo.jp/ls220db/) to download the installer.
- Select the region and model to go to your specific model’s d.buffalo website.
- Download the NAS Navigator2 installer and install it onto your computer.
For macOS 10.13 and Later
- Open Mac App Store, then search for the NAS Navigator2 app.
- Click Get, then click Install.
SmartPhone Navigator
SmartPhone Navigator will allow you to open LinkStation’s Settings, change the IP address, and configure WebAccess settings. Follow the procedure below to install the application.
- Open the App Store (iOS devices) or the Google Play (Android devices).
- Search for and install “SmartPhone Navigator”.
WebAccess
WebAccess will allow you to access files on the LinkStation. Follow the procedure below to install the WebAccess application.
- Open the App Store (iOS devices) or the Google Play (Android devices).
- Search for and install “WebAccess”.

Securing Admin Account
The default username and password of Buffalo NAS devices are “admin” and “password”. It is recommended to change this to a stronger password, combination of numbers, uppercase, and lowercase letters. You can follow the steps below to change your admin credentials.
- Open NAS Navigator2.
- Right click on the icon for the NAS device you wish to manage, then click Settings.
- Log in with existing admin username and password.
- Navigate to Users/Groups tab, then choose the admin account.
- Click Edit User.
- Enter a new Username and make sure to have a strong password.
- Click Save.
Securing File Sharing
By default, new shares are set with read and write access, but you may change the folder attribute to read-only. Follow the procedure below to change the shared folder attribute to read-only.
- From the Advanced Settings, click File Sharing.
- Click Folder Setup, then choose a shared folder.
- Click Edit, then change the “Attribute” option to “Read Only”.
- Click OK.
Securing Access Restrictions
Access restrictions can be set separately for each shared folder, but not for subfolders within the shared folders.
Configure access restrictions only through Settings. Configuring access restrictions through Windows is not supported and may cause unexpected behavior.
- From Advanced Settings, click File Sharing.
- Click the pop-out icon to the right of Folder Setup.
- Click the shared folder that you want to set access restrictions for.
- Click Edit.
- Enable Access Restrictions.
- Select the level of access for the user or group.
Backing up Data
You can back up the LinkStation folders to another shared folder on the same LinkStation, a connected USB drive, or a shared folder on another Buffalo NAS device, either on the same network or on another network.
Encrypting Settings Data Transmission
All communication with Settings can use SSL encryption if you access the Settings page by changing “http://” to “https://” in the browser address bar or click Secure Connection from the login window. Once you are logged in using the HTTPS connection and wish to disable SSL encryption, click Normal Connection from the login window.
If a new firmware version is available, a message is displayed when the LinkStation boots. You can update the firmware as below:
- From the Advanced Settings, click Management.
- Click the pop-out icon to the right of the Update.
- Click OK.
- Click Install Update.
- The Confirm Operation screen will open. Enter the confirmation number, then click OK.
Restarting using the Power Switch
- Move the power switch to the off position, then wait for 5-10 seconds.
- Move the power switch back to the on position.
Restarting using NAS Navigator2
- Click the power icon at the top-right of the Settings, then select Restart.
Initializing from Settings
- From Advanced Settings, click Management.
- Click the pop-out icon to the right of the Restore/Erase.
- Click Initialize LinkStation.
- The Confirm Operation screen will open. Enter the confirmation number, then click OK.
- The LinkStation will restore its factory default settings.
Initializing Using the Function Button
- Turn off the LinkStation.
- Turn the LinkStation on while holding down the function button. The function LED will flash white.
- Press the function button again while the LED is flashing.
- Initialization will take 5 to 10 minutes. Do not power down the LinkStation while it is initializing and showing the I23 message in NAS Navigator2 and with the power LED. When initialization is finished, the LinkStation will automatically reboot.
