Trend Micro WiFi Advisor displays a warning when you connect to a potentially unsafe wireless network or hotspot without trustworthy security credentials.

How it works

When you connect to a network, your computer will normally contact an authentication server. This server should have a reliable security certificate to help ensure that nobody else intercepts the data that you send and receive through the network. If the authentication server has an expired, fake, or otherwise untrustworthy security certificate, your connection could be hijacked or monitored without your knowledge.

For your own safety, Trend Micro classifies this networks into the following categories:

  • Safe. Connections are password-protected.
  • Risky. Redirects your connection without encryption. Connect at your own risk.
  • Dangerous. Does not have an authentication process or a valid security certificate. Avoid connecting to this network.
