When you try to install Trend Micro VPN on a Windows computer, you may see this message and the installation cannot continue until the issue is resolved.
Why Did This Happen
This error appears when Windows still detects components from a previous Trend Micro VPN installation, even if the app is no longer visible in the system. Common reasons include:
- Leftover files or settings from a previous Trend Micro VPN installation
- Background services or processes related to an older Trend Micro VPN app that are still running
How to Fix the Issue
Follow the steps below in order to completely remove any existing Trend Micro VPN components, then reinstall the app.
- Uninstall Trend Micro VPN
- Press Windows + I to open Settings, then select Apps.
- Click Installed apps (or Apps & features).
- Look for Trend Micro VPN.
- Select it, then click Trend Micro VPN>.
- Restart your computer once the uninstall is complete.
- Use the Trend Micro Uninstall Tool
- Download and run Trend Micro’s Uninstall Tool.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to remove leftover files and services.
- Restart your computer after the tool finishes.
- Check for running background processes
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Look for any Trend Micro VPN–related processes.
- If found, select the process and click End task.
- Close Task Manager.
- Install Trend Micro VPN again
- Run the Trend Micro VPN installer.
- Click Install.
- Once installed, open the app and follow the on-screen instructions.
- Activate your Trend Micro VPN to complete the setup.
If the error still appears after uninstalling:
Tip: This step is important if Windows still detects Trend Micro VPN even after uninstalling it normally.
