When trying to install Trend Micro on your Windows Computer, old or new, you encountered this message:
Why did this happen?
Since Windows 10 build 15042, Microsoft has introduced a new setting that restricts app installations to those from the Windows Store exclusively. This also happens when your computer is in S mode.
How do I fix this?
Turn off App Recommendations
- Click the Start >Settings >Apps> Apps & Features.
- Below "Choose where to get apps", click and change the options from "The Microsoft Store Only(Recommended)" to "Anywhere" (Options vary by Windows version.)
- Close the Settings and try to re-install Trend Micro.
Switch out of S mode
Windows 10:
Windows 10 in S mode only runs apps that you can find in the Microsoft Store. If you want to install an app that is not available in the Store, you will need to switch out of S mode.
NOTE: Switching out of S mode is one-way. You cannot enable it again once you go back to Windows 10 Home or 10 Pro.
- Click the Start , then go to Settings > Update & Security > Activation.
- In the Switch to Windows 10 Home/Pro section, click Go to the Store.
- On the Switch out of S mode page, click the Get button.
Windows 11:
Windows 11 in S mode is designed for security and performance, exclusively running apps from the Microsoft Store.
If you want to install an app that is not available in the Microsoft Store, you need to switch out of S mode.
IMPORTANT: Switching out of S mode is one-way. You cannot enable it again once you go back to Windows 11 Home or 11 Pro.
- Click the Start , then go to Settings > System > Activation.
- In the Switch to Windows 11 Home/Pro section, click Go to the Store.
NOTE: If you see the Upgrade your edition of Windows section, DO NOT CLICK the Go to the Store link that you see there.
- On the Switch out of S mode page, click the Get button.
