After running a scan, HouseCall for Home Networks will show the information of devices connected to your network. You might see devices that you are unable to identify if they belong to you.
This article will show you how to identify devices and prevent stranger’s devices from connecting to your network.
To identify a device that you are unable to recognize, do the following:
- Take note of the IP address and MAC address of the unknown device from the scan results.
- Check your devices. Look for the device with the same IP or MAC Address listed on the scan results.
- On iOS or Android devices, go to Wi-Fi Settings > Network, then look for the IP address.
- On Windows PC, press WINDOWS + R keys, then type "CMD". On the Command Prompt, type ipconfig, then check the IP address.
- On Mac, Go to Apple Menu > System Preferences > Network”, then look for the IP address.
- On network devices such as routers, printers, camera, and other IoT devices, you may check the MAC address on the device label.
You can also manually check the unrecognized device by doing the following:
- Turn off the device that you want to check.
- Run a scan.
- On Windows PC or Mac, check which device has the offline status (with a grey dot).
- On mobile devices, check which of your devices is not listed on the result. HouseCall for Home Networks will not detect the device if it is not connected to the network.
- Turn on the device, then run a scan.
- On Windows PC or Mac, you will see the device again with online status (with a green dot).
- On a mobile device, you will see the device listed again on the result.
Prevent unknown devices from connecting to your network
- Update your default Wi-Fi SSID
- Update your Wi-Fi password with a stronger one
- Disable WPS (Wi-Fi Protected Setup) through your router’s admin console
