You see this notification pop up from the Trend Micro Home Network Security app when you are using a NETGEAR DGN2200 modem router for your home network:
"Remote Code Execution Vulnerability"
Why did this happen?
This vulnerability uses Remote Code Execution which forces an end-user to execute unwanted actions on a web application in which they are currently authenticated.
What are its risks?
- Attackers could gain administrator privileges and execute commands on the modem router.
- Attackers in the internal network could exploit this vulnerability by tricking a logged-in user into visiting a malicious website or using a malicious program.
- Attackers from the external network can exploit this vulnerability only if the administrator password is set to the default value.
What should I do next?
- Change your modem router’s administrator password from the default value to a strong one. Guide me.
- Update the firmware of your Netgear modem router and other IoT devices. Show me how.
