"Malware MIRAI Telnet activity"

Why did this happen?

This malware turns network devices running on Linux OS into remotely controlled "bots" that can be used as part of a botnet in large-scale network attacks.

The Mirai CnC (Command and Control) server uses a telnet service to acquire bots using a scanner that can quickly identify any device listening on open ports.

What are its risks?

Infected devices will scan the internet for other IoT devices with exposed Telnet ports, and use the default credentials to break in and take over the devices.

What should I do next?

  • Make sure to update your apps and antivirus program.
  • Change the default password of the router and create a much stronger password. Check your router’s manual or handbook for the instructions on changing your router’s password. Show me how.
  • Always make sure your router has the latest firmware update. Show me how.
