You may be asked to enter your Client Key again when using Trend Micro ID Protection. This usually happens when the place where your device stores the Client Key has been cleared or removed.

Why This Happens

If You’re Using the Web Version (Desktop/Laptop)

Your Client Key is saved only in your browser’s local storage.

ID Protection will ask for it again if this storage is cleared. This can happen when:

  • You clear cookies or site data
  • Your browser deletes data automatically on exit
  • You use Incognito/Private/Guest Mode
  • PC cleanup tools remove browser data
  • The browser crashes or resets
  • You reinstall or refresh the browser

If You’re Using the Mobile App (iOS/Android)

Your Client Key is saved in your device’s secure storage.

It will be removed if:

  • You uninstall or reinstall the ID Protection app.
  • You clear the app’s data
  • Your device is reset to factory settings
  • System cleanup tools delete app data

When this happens, the app can no longer retrieve your Client Key.

What You Should Do

Enter your Client Key again to continue using ID Protection.

Very Important: Keep a Copy of Your Client Key

Your Client Key is not stored on Trend Micro servers.

This means Trend Micro cannot recover it for you if it is lost.

To avoid losing access to your data, keep a secure copy of your Client Key.

If You Lose Your Client Key

You will need to reset it.

Resetting your Client Key permanently deletes:

  • All saved passwords in your Password Vault
  • All Secure Notes

How to Prevent This From Happening

For Web Users

  • Use a normal browsing mode (avoid Incognito/Private/Guest Mode).
  • Do not clear cookies or site data for the ID Protection website.
  • Turn off settings that delete browsing data automatically.
  • Add ID Protection to the exclusion list of cleanup tools.

For Mobile App Users

  • Avoid uninstalling the ID Protection app.
  • Do not clear the app’s data from your device settings.
  • Before resetting or switching devices, make sure you have a copy of your Client Key.

Good to Know

  • Your Client Key stays on your device only and is never stored by Trend Micro.
  • If your device/browser removes the stored key, you will need to enter it again.
