After running a scan, you will see devices that are connected to your network. You might see devices that you cannot identify.
We suggest you do any of the following to make sure your home network is secure:
Identify if the device belongs to your family or not
Each device connected to your network can be identified with its' IP address or MAC address. To check it, do the following:
- Identify the device using the information on the device detail page.
- Check if the IP address or MAC address of the real device matches the IP address or MAC address shown in the app. If the addresses are the same, it means that it is one of your devices.
For more information on how to check the IP address or MAC address of your device, do the following depending on your device’s Operating System:
Android
- On your Android device, Tap Settings.
- Tap Wireless & networks or About Device.
- Tap Wi-Fi Settings or Hardware Info.
- Press the Menu key, then choose Advanced.
- Your device's wireless adapter's MAC address should be visible.
iOS
- On your iOS device, tap Settings.
- Tap General.
- Tap About.
- The Mac address is listed as Wi-Fi Address.
Windows
- Click the Start icon, then click Settings.
- Click the Network & Internet icon.
- To view the IP address of a wired connection, do the following:
- On the left pane, click Ethernet.
- From the list, select your network connection.
- The IP address can be found next to "IPv4 Address".
- To view the IP address of a wireless connection, do the following:
- On the left pane, click Wi-Fi.
- Click Advanced Options.
- The IP address can be found next to "IPv4 Address".
MacOS
- From the Apple menu, open System Preferences.
- Click Network.
- Under Preferred Networks, select the network connection you are using, then click Advanced.
- The MAC address is the “Wi-Fi address” located at the bottom part of the window.
You can also manually check the unrecognized device by doing the following:
- Turn OFF the device that you want to check.
- Run a scan.
- On Windows PC or Mac, check which device has the offline status (with a grey dot).
- On mobile devices, check which of your devices is not listed on the result. The app will not detect the device if it is not connected to the network.
- Turn on the device, then run a scan.
- On Windows PC or Mac, you will see the device again with online status (with a green dot).
- On a mobile device, you will see the device listed again on the result.
For your reference, you may change the device information using your Windows PC or Mac by doing the following:
- Click the Device Card.
- Click Edit or click the pencil icon.
- Edit the device name.
- Edit the category image.
Prevent unknown devices from connecting to your network
Below are some of the best practices to make sure your home network is protected.
- Update your default Wi-Fi SSID.
- Update your Wi-Fi password with a stronger one.
- Disable WPS (Wi-Fi Protected Setup) through your router’s admin console.
